The Systems & Information Engineering and Civil & Environmental Engineering Programs within the Department of Engineering Systems and Environment (ESE) at the University of Virginia (UVA) invite applications for open rank tenure-track/tenured faculty positions.

Candidates for the Systems & Information Engineering Program are expected to contribute to one of the core methodological areas. While all areas are welcome, we are particularly interested in scholars who can complement existing expertise in one or more of the following areas:

    • Modeling and simulation,
    • Optimization/decision & control systems,
    • Human factors and human-in-the loop systems,
    • Data analytics and machine learning, or
    • Digital transformation of supply chains.

Candidates for the Civil & Environmental Engineering Program are expected to contribute primarily to the domain area of:

    • Infrastructure (e.g., digital twins, infrastructure health monitoring),
    • Resilience of structural systems, or
    • Smart infrastructure materials and manufacturing.

Beyond the program areas, the candidate's focus area should support the broader mission of ESE to advance the design, management, and operation of complex systems integrating people and technology across scales. This mission includes faculty and students working on engineering systems ranging from personalized technologies to support health and well-being, to decision-support systems for companies and organizations, to large-scale civil and environmental infrastructure.

The ESE department has experienced strong growth in external funding and graduate programs, with over 40 faculty, 200 graduate students, 400 undergraduate students, and $10 million in annual research expenditures. Building on this growth, we seek applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds and/or candidates that can contribute diverse perspectives and experiences to the advancement of the core mission of the ESE department, which emphasizes quality of life for people and communities. Preference will be given to candidates whose research complements and multiplies the current strengths of the department, contributes to advancing technology for the social good, and promotes a collaborative, diverse, and vibrant community.

Candidates that seek to address complex, systems-oriented research problems will benefit from the cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research opportunities available at UVA. For example, many ESE faculty are members of the Link Lab (http://linklab.virginia.edu), UVA's world-class center of excellence in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) with faculty from across the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Many also particulate in pan-university institutes like the Environmental Resilience Institute (https://eri.virginia.edu) and the newly founded School of Data Science (https://datascience.virginia.edu), bringing engineering perspectives to these broader initiatives across UVA. Joint appointment with other departments is also very common and encouraged within the School of Engineering and Applied Science at UVA.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in a related engineering discipline (e.g., industrial engineering, systems engineering, or civil engineering) or closely related field prior to the start date of this position. Candidates must be able to contribute to the teaching mission of the department, which offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in systems engineering and in civil engineering. Candidates from non-traditional academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply including veterans, industry professionals, or governmental laboratory researchers/scientists. A record of excellence in research, as appropriate for the candidate's rank, and a commitment to teaching excellence is required. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching, and an emerging national reputation.

We are also considering early-career candidates interested in exploring postdoc-to-faculty pathway positions. Here candidates will have the opportunity to expand their research training or embed themselves within a domain (e.g., healthcare system; community engagement; etc.) as a postdoctoral research working closely with a small group of mentors and are guaranteed faculty positions within the ESE department upon completion of the postdoc.
