Dear Colleagues -
Over the last 4.5 years, I often received emails from junior colleagues asking me to provide evidence about the quality of the journal (Manufacturing and Service Operations Management M&SOM). They need this information to explain their research achievements when they apply for promotions. While M&SOM is well recognized within the OM/OR community, it may not be well understood by colleagues in other disciplines. Even though M&SOM is a field-based journal that is akin to Marketing Sci,, Organizational Science, ISR under the INFORMS umbrella, M&SOM is relatively young -- it was established 20 years ago.
Despite its shorter history, M&SOM is a dynamic and visible journal that thrives over the years because it strives to publish OM research that is novel, rigorous, and relevant to practice. Also, M&SOM engages practitioners via practice-based competition, data-driven competition with big data provided by major international firms such as Cainaio (the logistics arms of Alibaba), etc. Besides M&SOM is now on the Financial Times top 50 journal list since 2017, I have prepared a short presentation for our junior colleagues to share with their senior colleagues within their group and other areas as well as their faculty deans. I shall let the community to decide whether M&SOM is a top journal or not, but I can assure you that the OM community embraces M&SOM and we are making great progress every single day -- including today -- Happy Mother's Day!
