    KLU is searching a

postdoctoral research fellow (gn*) in Operations Management/Logistics with a strong background in stochastic modeling.

(START DATE JAN 1, 2019, OR EARLIER)

    Position:

The position will have an initial contract duration of two years with potentially a third year extension. The postdoctoral fellow will work with Professor Jan Fransoo and the students that are currently advised by him. The students are working in the area of traditional retail distribution in urban and rural environments of developing countries. Furthermore, the fellow will define her or his own research topics within the wider scope of the research themes that Professor Fransoo studies. These include intermodal and ocean container transport and other sustainable supply chain topics. The candidate is expected to conduct research such that it can be published in the premier operations management and operations research journals.

    Requirements:

This position requires a completed PhD focused on stochastic modeling, implying the degree should be in Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Operations Management, or a related field. The successful applicant has a strong background in stochastic modeling (inventory management, stochastic processes, queuing theory, Markov decision processes or related methods) with a particular focus on formal analysis. Given the more domain-specific and relevance-based research of the group, this position is ideal for a candidate that has completed a PhD in more theoretical work and is interested to make a link to more applied work. Willingness to delve into data analytics issues, and programming skills are other important treats of a good candidate, but not at the expense of analytical excellence in stochastic models. Candidates without a PhD or without any research work in stochastic modeling are requested to refrain from applying.

    Environment and team:

The team is internationally diverse and the candidate is expected to be fluent in English (written and spoken), open-minded and willing to collaborate with other researchers and students with different background and different skills. The postdoctoral position is an ideal stepping stone to further develop your qualification for a tenure track Operations Management position in the international job market of business schools and industrial engineering departments.

    Salary and Conditions:

The gross annual salary for this position is about 45,000 euros. Furthermore, the postdoctoral fellow will have access to an annual discretionary research budget of 5,000 euros to support research and research-related activities. This position qualifies for the German public health insurance which is very affordable and of high quality.

    Enquiries and Application:

Further enquiries about the position should be addressed to Professor Jan Fransoo at jan.fransoo@the-klu.org. Applications consisting of a resume, a two-page research statement, and your best research paper in full should be submitted in a single email to opportunities@the-klu.org. Please mention in the subject header of the email: "Postdoctoral fellow - Fransoo". Review of applications will start by 1 October and will continue until the position is filled.
