Reliability and Safety of Battery Energy Storage Systems
    Friday February 28, 1-2 p.m, Eastern time

Presenter: Dr. Pingfeng Wang, Associate Professor,

Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Rechargeable lithium-ion battery has become a key energy storage solution for portable electronic devices, ranging from smart phones and tablet PCs to electric vehicles (EVs). To ensure safety and reliability of the batteries, failure analysis as well as the prognostics and health management (PHM) techniques play an important role in battery design and operations management, as they aim to address safety-critical failure modes and mitigate potential failure impacts through better system designs, and detect, diagnose, and predict system-wide effects of adverse events and enable a proactive approach to deal with system failures. This webinar will introduce the state of the art studies on reliability and safety of battery energy storage systems and research challenges, ranging from battery failure modes and the physics-of-failure analysis, failure modeling and cell design optimization, data-driven methods for battery failure diagnosis, prognostics and health management, as well as operations managements of large scale energy storage system assets. Existing commercial battery systems as well as next generation fast charging/discharging battery technologies will be discussed as examples.

Dr. Pingfeng Wang is currently an associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering. He got his B.S. in 2001 in Mechanical Engineering from University of Science and Technology in Beijing, his M.S. in 2006 in Applied Mathematics from Tsinghua University and his Ph.D. in 2010 in Mechanical Engineering from University of Maryland. Dr. Wang is a member of IIE, ASME, IEEE, and AIAA. He is currently serving as the Board of Directors for RAMS, a member of AIAA non-deterministic Approach (NDA) technical committee and ASME Design Automation Conference executive committee. He has served as the president of the IIE Quality Control and Reliability Engineering (QCRE) Division, the member of IEEE Reliability Administrative Committee (AdCom), the technical program chair and paper review chairs for IEEE Annual Conference on Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) continuously from 2012 to 2015. Dr. Wang's expertise is in the area of engineering design for reliability and failure resilience, failure prognostics and health management. He is the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2014, the Young Researcher Award from International Society of Green Manufacturing and Applications in 2012, and the Young Investigator Award from ASME design automation committee in 2016. Dr. Wang's research is currently supported by the National Science Foundation, Department of Transportation, Department of Energy, Office of Naval Research, Department of Veterans Affairs, and private industry sponsors such as Deere and Co. and Spirit AeroSystem Inc.  Dr. Wang is currently serving as a guest editor for Taylor & Francis Journal of Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructures (JSRI), a review editor for the Springer Journal of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (SAMO), and an associate editor for the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design (JMD).
