The Ph.D. program in Business Information Technology (BIT) within the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for several fully funded Ph.D. student positions for Fall 2022. The application system is open from now until 28-Feb-2022. The first round of consideration for our premium scholarship funding ($24K base + $10.5K a year for up to 5 years) will commence the first week of January 2022; thus, early applications are strongly encouraged.

Admissions into the BIT Ph.D. program is highly competitive. Preference is for candidates with master's degrees and some work experience, as well as top academic credentials, and strong research inclinations. Most admitted full-time BIT Ph.D. students are fully funded as follows:

    • Up to five years of funding of $34,500 each year (base is $24K and premium scholarship is $10.5K)
    • First two summers, guaranteed additional $6000 summer support; additional summer support is available on a competitive basis
    • Tuition waivers each year
    • Funding for data collection
    • Funding for conference travel and attendance
    • Needed software licenses and access to hardware

The following are key points of distinction of our program:

    1. The BIT Ph.D. is one of the few officially certified STEM-based Ph.D. degrees that is housed in a leading business school, greatly increasing its academic and industry market value.
    2. Several highly marketable interdisciplinary emphases can be chosen as fields of study, including but not limited to (including combinations thereof):
    • Information Systems/Information Technology
    • Security and Privacy
    • Operations Management/Research, Supply Chain, and Management Science
    • Business Analytics/Data Analytics, Decision Science, Artificial Intelligence
    1. The BIT's world-class interdisciplinary faculty members work closely with Ph.D. students. BIT Ph.D. faculty are among the most productive IS/IT, OM, and MS scholars in the world, routinely publishing in Management Science, Information Systems Research, J. of Operations Management, MIS Quarterly, Production and Operations Management, J. of Management Information Systems, and the like. The list of faculty is available at: https://bit.vt.edu/faculty/directory.html
    2. A rich curriculum allows for three different methodological tracks in addition to the department's multiple BIT Ph.D. seminars:
    • Behavioral or organizational research methods
    • Quantitative and econometric research methods
    • Data and decision science research methods
    1. The Pamplin College of Business is in the final process of fund-raising for a new four-building $250 million campus, called the Global Business and Analytics Complex. One of the buildings being built right now is a 100,000+ square foot building fully dedicated to business analytics and data science-the only one of its kind at leading business schools.
