"How Will the AI Genie Behave?"

We are witnessing the increasing ubiquity of AI, with accelerating deployment across task domains, entrepreneurial activity across industries, and embedding in core processes across digital platforms and firms. Alongside this increasing ubiquity of AI, we are encountering broad unintended consequences, both beneficial and harmful. These unintended consequences are arising from unexpected behaviors and downstream effects that emerge through interactions of AI agents with the environment and with other machine and human agents. To be able to control the actions of AI in ways that harvest its benefits while minimizing harm, we need to develop an integrated understanding of AI behavior in the environments in which it is deployed. I will offer an integrated perspective on AI behavior that considers how AI agents acquire their behavior, how the behavior is triggered and enacted, the interaction dynamics of AI agents with other agents, and the influence of policy decisions on how AI systems evolve. I will draw on this perspective to discuss the research, managerial, and policy implications related to AI behavior.

Speaker Bio
Arun Rai is Regents' Professor of the University System of Georgia at the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, holds the Robinson Chair, and is the Director of the Center for Digital Innovation. Arun's research for over 30 years has focused on the development and deployment of information systems to drive innovation and create value. His research has contributed to understanding the digital transformation of organizations and supply chains; governance of IT investments and platform ecosystems; and deployment of digital innovations at scale to empower individuals and address thorny societal problems including poverty, health disparities, infant mortality, and digital inequality. Several of his research projects have been in collaboration with major corporations in automotives, hi-tech, healthcare, financial services, and logistics and supply chains and with not-for-profit organizations and government agencies. His work has been published extensively in premier journals in Information Systems and other disciplines, has received several best paper awards, and has been extensively cited across disciplines. He is a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems and a Distinguished Fellow of the INFORMS Information Systems Society, and received the LEO Award from the Association for Information Systems for Lifetime Exceptional Achievement in Information Systems.
