    U.S. Federal Policy Update 

    • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stated that the basic framework for the upcoming fourth coronavirus relief package has been finalized, but the Trump administration has requested additional time to review the details of the plan. Thus, the Senate GOP's package will likely be released on Monday, with Majority Leader McConnell emphasizing that there is "an agreement in principal on the shape of the package."
    • Regarding the above package, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stated that Democrats were not pleased with the Republican proposal, stating that "what [they] have seen so far falls very short of the challenge to defeat the virus."
    • The Labor Department released its weekly unemployment data, finding that another 1.4 million Americans filed for first-time unemployment benefits last week. 
    • The Trump administration announced that it will be providing an additional to $5 billion to nursing homes and veterans' homes around the country, to bolster their coronavirus recovery efforts. 
    • President Trump announced that the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida would be cancelled due to the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

     

    Global Response 

    • World Health Organization Emergencies Programme Executive Director Michael Ryan stated that the WHO is "always ready and will always remain ready to provide advice, input, and service to any of [their] member states wherever they are."
    • Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that they would be extending a $1 billion loan to Latin America and the Caribbean, to be used for accessing a coronavirus vaccine.
    • French Health Minister Olivier Véran announced that the French government is planning to distribute 40 million masks to the country's poorest citizens. 
    • Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced that the coronavirus pandemic is estimated to cause the Australian GDP to fall by 4.75% in this fiscal year. 
    • The United Kingdom government announced that additional places will mandate face coverings, including shops, supermarkets, banks, take-out restaurants, and more. 

     

    State Update 

    • New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that their school system would delay in-person learning through at least September 7th. 
    • New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced that they would be introducing a $6 million emergency grant program for small businesses – which would be able to authorize up to $10,000 in direct assistance to help struggling entities pay their rent.
    • North Carolina Emergency Management Director Mike Sprayberry announced that the state will wind down its deployed National Guard's COVID-19 operations – effective tomorrow.
    • Miami Mayor Francis Suarez announced that they are doubling the mask mandate fines from $50 to $100, stating that officials have issued 115 tickets for face mask violations in the past week. 
    • Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett announced that bars and clubs in the city would be closed through August 12th. 

    Economic Update

    • U.S. stocks fell today with all three indices reporting losses. The Nasdaq Composite declined by 2.3%, the S&P 500 by 1.2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 1.3%.
