This PhD scholarship is part of an ongoing collaboration between the DTU Management department and a large hospital in Denmark. Key to a hospital's functioning is the logistical tasks in delivering goods, medicine, food and sterile equipment in a safe and timely manner. In the near future, the new treatment facilities in Denmark will rely heavily on just-in-time deliveries of supplies making a robust supply chain a paramount factor. With many stakeholders and various types of goods with special handling requirements, the supply chain within public healthcare is complex and large. How do we ensure a stable line of supplies? What is the consequence of breakdowns and how can they be fixed?

Combining quantitative techniques such as mathematical modelling (operations research) and simulation yields large potentials in the quest of entangling and analyzing the complex supply chain of healthcare delivery. This PhD-project will concern the simulation and optimization of various chains in logistics. The overarching goal is to allow a more holistic view of the complete supply chain across sectors.

    Examples of potential cases are:

    • Bed logistics
    • Blood sample logistics
    • Warehouse optimization
    • Optimization of travel routes to- and from regional warehouses and hospitals in the capital region of Denmark
