The Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research Practice

    2019 Call for Submissions

    Deadline:  May 1, 2019

    Website:  Wagner Prize

Are you involved in an interesting, practical, and successful OR/MS/Analytics project?  How about  submitting your project for The Daniel H. Wagner Prize consideration?!?!

For the past 20 years, the Wagner Prize has recognized and rewarded projects of high quality, strong mathematics, excellent writing, and success.  This year's applicants will be judged by a diverse team drawn from academia and practice.  We will be looking for well-written papers with strong analytical content (i.e. mathematical development, solution, unique new algorithm, or series advances tied with an application).  Your project doesn't need to change the world or an entire industry – the Wagner recognizes all sorts of accomplishments, and not necessarily just quantitative impact.

The submission process is straightforward.  We recommend reviewing the prize website, and read the case studies about successful applicants of the past.  By May 1, 2019, for the application you'll need a 2-4 page abstract in English describing evidence of mathematical development, solution, unique new algorithm or advances related to the application.  This document will introduce your project to the judging committee, and will be critical for advancing to the next phase – so it is important for this abstract to be well-written.  You'll also need a document verifying the project's success in practice:  this can be satisfied by a short letter from a project sponsor.  Because finalists and the winner will be asked to provide a manuscript to be published in the INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics (https://pubsonline.informs.org/journal/inte), you'll need to provide written permission for publication of a previously unpublished, English-language paper based on your project.  Finally, the application will need a written commitment, if selected as a finalist, to make a 30-minute presentation at the 2019 INFORMS Annual Meeting (October 20-23, 2019, Seattle WA US) and written commitment, if selected as the winner, to reprise the presentation at the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research (April 26-28, 2020, Aurora CO USA).

After you have submitted your application on May 1, 2019, you will be notified if your project has been selected as a semifinalist by May 17, 2019.  Semifinalists must then submit a full paper by June 24, 2019.  These papers are used to select a finalist, in early August.  Finalists may then update manuscripts by September 27, 2019.

There are many benefits of participation in the Wagner prize process.  In addition to project recognition and exposure, this is a path to a possible publication in an INFORMS journal.  Consider becoming part of the legacy of INFORMS by considering your project for a Wagner prize submission!
