Postdoctoral Fellows at Brunel University London Business School (two positions)
Full-time, fixed-term contract (36 months until 31 December 2021)
Salary: £28,936 to £38,833 per annum plus £2,166 per annum London weighting (grade R1)

These are exciting opportunities for talented and ambitious individuals with the vision of applying theoretical knowledge of Operations Research to address real-world problems in collaboration with business partners. The successful candidates will work on the EU Horizon 2020 project PortForward that aims to enhance the sustainability of maritime shipping by making the Port of the Future smarter, greener and more interconnected. The PortForward consortium employs a combination of optimisation, decision support, and ICT/IoT solutions to reduce environmental impacts of port operations while improving cost- and service-oriented KPIs by facilitating information flows between ports and port communities. The post-holders will work in a large multidisciplinary research environment within Operations and Information Systems Management (OISM) research group in the Brunel Business School, the Times Higher Education Award winner as the Business School of the Year and one of the largest schools at Brunel University London.
The Postdoctoral Fellows (PFs) will primarily work on the work package 'Green Scheduling and Sustainability of Operations' led by Brunel University London and contribute to the other work packages of the project PortForward. The PFs will have collaboration with other members of the PortForward consortium including technology and port partners from Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, Belgium, and Greece. They will have close collaboration and frequent visits to the Port of Vigo in Spain and further interactions with other port partners of the project including the Ports of Balears (Palma, Alcúdia, Maó, Eivissa, and La Savina in Spain), Livorno, Naples, and Salerno (Italy), Kristiansand (Norway), and Magdeburg (Germany) – a combination of short and open sea as well as inland ports in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and mainland Europe. The post-holders will apply a combination of classic OR methods for multi-objective optimisation problems and metaheuristics/intelligent search methods to develop optimisation-based decision support tools to enhance the sustainability of port operations by applying the novel concept of Green Scheduling. The developed solution techniques will constitute a core component of the PortForward decision support platform for industrial applications.
