INFORMS Boston Chapter Talk 11 March 2020 at 6:30 PM, Dr. Shawn Weil, Executive VP at Aptima, Inc., Operator state measurement in dynamic human/automation teams

Locations: Aptima, Inc., 12 Gill Street, Suite 1400, Woburn, MA 01801

Title: Operator state measurement in dynamic human/automation teams: Current work and future directions

Abstract: Artificially intelligent (AI) agents are increasingly being considered and employed in complex training and operational environments. Whether being used as logistical help, decision-support, or as full-fledged teammates, the vision is for AI to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of teams, reduce costs and risks, and create a feedback loop that improves the value of AI system components over time. In many domains, significant resources have been expended to instrument environments that sense the state of the world and feed that information back to the AI so it can make relevant recommendations and actions. Similarly, the capability of AI components themselves are often monitored and fed back to the system. However, the physical, cognitive, and affective states of human users in these systems are often overlooked. In this talk, I'll (1) describe the criticality of incorporating human state information into complex, coupled systems, (2) discuss ongoing work at Aptima that reflects different approaches to individual and team state estimation/measurement, and (3) imagine the possibilities for future development that includes robust individual, team, system, and environmental state monitoring.
