    U.S. Federal Policy Update 

    • A group of Republican senators met this afternoon to discuss the next stimulus package, with attendees including Senators Mike Crapo (ID), Rob Portman (OH), David Perdue (GA), John Cornyn (TX), and Pat Toomey (PA). Senator Cornyn stated that they group "has been trying to figure out what is working and what isn't working."
    • Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn issued a joint statement that "producers, processors and regulators are taking every necessary precaution to prioritize food safety" amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they encouraged global food exports to not be restricted, as there is "no evidence that people can contract COVID-19 from food."
    • National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci encouraged building up national and state stockpiles – stating that "even in areas where there is a diminution of infection and diminution of hospitalization, we still need to build up a stockpile."

     

    Global Response 

    • The International Monetary Fund released research forecasting that the global economy would shrink by 4.9% over the course of 2020. 
    • The World Health Organization estimated that the global number of coronavirus cases would reach 10 million within the next week. Furthermore, the WHO's Health Emergencies Program Executive Director Mike Ryan stated that "the pandemic for many countries in the Americas has not peaked," as "they are not reaching a low enough level of transmission to exit from public health and social measures."
    • Colombian President Ivan Duque extended the country's lockdown measures until July 15th. 
    • Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov announced that he has tested positive for coronavirus, after a visit to Moscow on Wednesday. 

     

    State Update 

    • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy held a joint press conference, announcing that they would impose a mandatory 14-day quarantine on travelers coming from "states with an infection rate of more than 10 per 100,000 people over a seven-day rolling average." The states that meet this criteria are: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Utah and Texas.
    • New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced that museums, libraries, indoor recreation facilities, bowling alleys, and aquariums would be permitted to reopen at 25% capacity on July 2nd. 
    • North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper extended their second phase of reopening, delaying entering the third phase until July 17th. He also announced that the state would start requiring residents to wear face coverings while in public. 
    • A group of House members from Florida sent a letter to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis urging him to issue a statewide mandate requiring all Floridians to wear masks, writing that "it is imperative that [he] take data-driven action to help protect Floridians, our families, and our communities from the dangers of COVID-19." The letter was sent from Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23), Alcee Hastings (FL-20), Kathy Castor (FL-14), Ted Deutch (FL-22), Frederica Wilson (FL-24), Lois Frankel (FL-21), Charlie Crist (FL-13), Val Demings (FL-10), Al Lawson (FL-05), Stephanie Murphy (FL-07), Darren Soto (FL-09), and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26).
    • The state of California set another record high for infections – recording over 7,100 new cases of coronavirus yesterday. 
    • Virginia's Department of Labor and Industry announced that they have proposed a set of coronavirus-era workplace safety mandates, which companies in the state would be required to implement in order to protect their workers from infection. 
    • Mississippi State Health Officer Thomas Dobbs cautioned residents that "just because you're tired of something doesn't mean it's gone." He added that they're "paying for coronavirus now," and "it's just going to continue to get worse."

     

    Economic Update

    • U.S. stocks fell throughout the day, with all three indices reporting overall losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 2.72%, the S&P 500 by 2.59%, and the Nasdaq Composite by 2.19%.
