    Dear Friends–

As you may know, Cainiao (Alibaba's logistics arm) and the MSOM society co-host the 2018 MSOM Data Driven Research Challenge that enables our colleagues to conduct data driven research by using Cainiao's Transaction level data.

We received many excellent submissions this year and all 4 finalists presented their papers during INFORMS Phoenix.  Upon further deliberation, the 2018 MSOM Data Driven Research Challenge committee has selected the following winner and finalists (corresponding authors):

    • Winner: Robert Bray (Northwestern University): "Operational Transparency: Showing When Work Gets Done"
    • Finalist: Cong Shi (University of Michigan): "Integrating Empirical Estimation and Assortment Personalization for E-Commerce: A Consider-then-Choose Model"
    • Finalist: ZY Zheng (UC Berkeley): "Demand Prediction, Predictive Shipping, and Product Allocation for Large-scale E-commerce"
    • Finalist: Vinayak Deshpande (UNC Chapel Hill): "Logistics Performance, Ratings, and its impact on Customer Purchasing Behavior and Sales in E-commerce Platforms"

Please join me in congratulating the above winner and finalists (corresponding authors)!

More importantly, this challenge would not be possible with the strong support from the Cainiao team who provided their transactional data and the hard work of all contestants.

     Best wishes,

    Chris Tang
