Welcome to the INFORMS Transportation Science and Logistics (TSL) Society!

The INFORMS Transportation Science and Logistics (TSL) Society provides INFORMS members and friends with a sustained, specialized focus on all topics of transportation science and logistics, including current and potential problems and contributions to their solution, and supports efforts to extend, unify, and integrate related branches of knowledge and practice. We encourage the education of students and the continuing education of practitioners.

The Society was formed in 2004 with the merger of the Transportation Science and Logistics Sections. The Aviation Applications Section became an affiliate of the Society in 2008 and all members of the Aviation Applications Section are also members of TSL.

The Society is the editorial home of one of INFORMS’ flagship journals, Transportation Science.

The Society includes five special interest groups: Air Transportation, Freight Transportation and Logistics, Urban Transportation Planning and Modeling, Facility Logistics, and Intelligent Transportation Systems.

  • New Braunfels, Texas, The City of New Braunfels is seeking a collaborative, transportation planning savvy individual to join the Transportation and Capital Improvements Department and continue the success of servicing the current and future needs of the New Braunfels community. Graduate Engineer or Engineer-In-Training would also be considered for this impactful position. GENERAL PURPOSE:   Under general supervision, performs professional engineering and project management work in the planning, design, and operations of traffic and transportation projects and project components; investigates requests for changes to traffic control devices that optimize the mobility, safety, and accessibility of city’s multimodal transportation network; and prepares and reviews traffic studies related to capital projects, street maintenance, and development. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Oversees the investigation of traffic requests generated by City Departments, external stakeholders, and the public regarding transportation and capital projects. This includes responding to traffic control devices and traffic calming requests, signal timing and operation, and identification of work order opportunities (e.g., signing and pavement markings) to enhance the operation and safety of existing facilities. Serve as the Transportation & Capital Improvements (TCI) Department’s staff liaison for the Transportation and Traffic Advisory Board. Attends other meetings as needed (e.g., City Council, City Boards and Commissions, Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO) committees, etc.) to discuss transportation initiatives. Oversees changes to and optimizes the City’s traffic signal system. Manage consultant contracts for planning, designing, and implementing traffic signal improvements and signal retiming evaluations. Manages implementing and updating the city’s Street Safety Action Plan. Utilize data (e.g., crash reports), research, and best practices to pursue low-cost, easy-to-implement transportation infrastructure enhancements proactively and equitably in addition to more costly improvements that may require capital project prioritization. Serve as the TCI Department’s primary conduit between the TCI Department and the Public Works Department’s Streets and Drainage Division. Coordinates with the Police Department to determine the appropriate installation and enforcement of traffic control devices. Provides technical support and guidance to Planning & Development Services Department staff through zoning, plat, and permit review and approval of private development projects. Provides technical support and review of project identification and prioritization, design plan review, and construction of city capital projects. Assists with long-range planning efforts (e.g., area or corridor studies). Reviews traffic studies, models, and other transportation forecast reports. Assists in addressing citizen/neighborhood requests for traffic calming by providing engineering analysis and presentations to applicable boards, committees, and/or commissions. Assists with project identification and cost estimates for the City’s Capital Improvement Program and the AAMPO’s Transportation Improvement Program. Assist in developing, presenting, and pursuing City Code and policy updates. Assist in the documentation and enhancement of standard processes, standard drawings, and specifications. Manages consultant service contracts for traffic analysis, data collection, and transportation project design. Reviews engineering plans prepared by consultants and assists in coordinating input from City departments and project stakeholders. Performs other duties as assigned or required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, AND four years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, including one year in traffic engineering, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. A master’s degree and experience in municipal government are preferred.   Required Licenses or Certifications: Must possess or be able to obtain, at the time of hire, a valid Texas Driver’s License. Texas Professional Engineer (PE) License, or the ability to obtain by reciprocity within six (6) months of hire date. Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification is preferred. Graduate Engineer Considerations: A graduate engineer or engineer-in-training may be considered. Extensive experience with traffic engineering analysis and design software including HCS, Synchro, AutoCAD Civil3D and Sidra. VISSIM and IHSDM experience strongly preferred. Good data interpretation and technical writing skills. Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills, with high level of attention to detail and self-motivated to be successful. Ability to identify and establish work priorities while balancing multiple projects. Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment, communicate (virtually and in-person) with clients and colleagues, both verbally and in writing. Previous experience on transportation projects (WisDOT experience a plus). This position requires you to have authorization to work in the United States for any employer.
