The Section on Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment (ENRE) pre-dates the founding of INFORMS, having originated as a special interest group (SIG) of the Operations Research Society of America. Starting as a SIG on energy and forestry applications, the scope was later expanded to include issues relating to both renewable and non-renewable natural resources and the environment.
The Section sponsors and supports a wide range of activities related to its interest areas, ranging from publishing a newsletter, sponsoring focused sessions at the national INFORMS meeting, holding its own conferences and publishing their proceedings, as well as maintaining this website.
ENRE also serves as a focal point for networking for researchers and practitioners working on issues in energy, natural resources, and/or the environment. ENRE has five active groups: Energy, Natural Resources, Environment-Sustainability, and Petrochemicals. In the past, the Energy group has sponsored its own conferences and proceedings. One of our major goals is to expand interest and participation to others with environmental interests outside these three groups.
- Promote the development and application of operations research/management science methods, techniques, and tools to the solution of problems relating to energy, natural resources and/or the environment;
- Encourage the exchange of information among practitioners and users in energy, natural resources, and environmental applications areas;
- Promote the maintenance of high professional standards in the application of operations research/management science to problem areas in energy, natural resources and/or the environment.
