    Seeking two new PhD students

    Industrial Engineering Research Group and the Forest Resources and Environmental Services Hub at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

    Background

    The University of British Columbia, established in 1915, is an exceptional place for studying and performing research and is consistently ranked among the top universities in the world.

    The Industrial Engineering Research Group (IERG) led by Dr. Taraneh Sowlati and the Forest Resources and Environmental Services Hub (FRESH) led by Dr. Verena Griess comprise of graduate students and scholars who perform research to solve complex problems related to forest management, and forest products and forest biomass supply chains. Projects at IERG and FRESH are carried out in close collaboration with industry as well as national/international research partners.

    Description of position

    We are seeking two new full-time PhD students with a focus on optimization and forestry. The Research Graduate funding will be available for four years. The students will be supervised jointly by Dr. Sowlati and Dr. Griess. The research projects will be performed closely with our industry collaborator to develop models and decision support tools for optimization of harvest planning/scheduling and logistics.

    The applicant must have a strong background in mathematical programming and other operations research methods, and a great interest in applying those methods in forestry. The ideal candidate must have a graduate degree in forestry, operations research, industrial engineering, or other related fields and a good knowledge of computer programming and supply chain modeling. The candidate must have demonstrated excellent research skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate with others efficiently.

    The successful candidates are expected to spend some time at the collaborator site in Vancouver Island every year. Interested candidates should send a cover letter, a copy of their CV, and any related published work via email to taraneh.sowlati@ubc.ca and verena.griess@ubc.ca.
