Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow
OVERVIEW
The Mechanical Engineering Department at MIT is collaborating with MITx to launch a new online program,
MicroMasters in Principles of Manufacturing, to expand the reach of manufacturing education at MIT to tens of
thousands of learners around the globe. The program aims to define and disseminate a set of core principles that underlie
manufacturing to equip the workforce to adapt and thrive in the modern work landscape characterized by fast evolving
technologies, instability in supply chains, and frequent introductions of new production processes.
The Mechanical Engineering Department is seeking to hire a 9-month postdoctoral teaching fellow to create online
curriculum and moderate graduate-level courses in the manufacturing online program, designed for engineers and
technologists with an interest in a career in advanced manufacturing. This postdoctoral fellow would collaborate with
leading academics and across multiple areas in manufacturing and contribute to online education research.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop course content for the manufacturing program, with a focus on assessment creation and also including
curriculum design, concept checks, recitation videos, and other supporting material.
• Help faculty members facilitate the course after launch. This may involve moderating the community of learners
by reading and answering posts and course help lines and communicating with other course staff and managing
the day-to-day operations of the course.
• Work in a team setting in collaboration with the manufacturing faculty and MITx, and under the guidance of
the MITx Digital Learning Laboratory Fellow.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of new digital tools and assessments.
• Assist with all aspects of course production: storyboarding, filming, editing, preparation and evaluation of
intellectual property (IP) content, quality assurance reviews, and course data analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS
• A Ph.D. degree in engineering or science in a relevant field that includes domain-specific knowledge in
manufacturing, supply chain, operations, statistics, or probability.
• Teaching experience in higher education settings in STEM fields and proficiency evaluating the effectiveness of
learning materials. Experiencing teaching subjects within the program curriculum is a plus.
• Strong problem-solving skills and working knowledge or ability to learn languages commonly used in
engineering (MATLAB and python) and basic web languages (HTML/XML/CSS).
• Strong track record of working both independently and collaboratively; must be organized, able to support
multiple projects simultaneously, work effectively in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
• Experience or ability to learn all stages of video production: storyboarding, filming, and editing.
• Good communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with teammates, faculty, and staff.
